Manchester Unity Building
Melbourne’s iconic Manchester Unity Building represents a rare blend of art, science, culture and commerce. As a magnificent structure, as a monument to human endeavour and as a hub of personal interaction, it has a special place in the history of Melbourne and the hearts of its citizens as well as the city’s economy.
Take your time to look through the history of this building, maintenance and restoration works and grab a bite at our popular 1932 Cafe. We also offers tours of the Manchester Unity Building which can be booked online here.
History
The site of the Manchester Unity Building was first bought in early land sales for the price of £35. In 1928, MU IOOF paid £335,000 for the site, making just one square foot worth more than the whole block had cost originally.
The Melbourne Architect Marcus Barlow, who designed the Manchester Unity Building also built Melbourne’s Century Building which features similar terracotta tiling and gothic style.
In the year it moved to the new premises, the Manchester Unity IOOF had 28,000 members, each paying a small subscription in exchange for sickness and funeral benefits. The decision to build new headquarters for the Manchester Unity IOOF had been made in an effort not only to market the MU Order, attract new members and create work for existing members but also as a bold gesture to reinvigorate a city shackled by economic depression.
In announcing its new accommodation, the Order (till then known for its ‘co-operative thrift’) declared itself ‘undepressed by the Depression’ that had struck since it bought the site, adding that the new undertaking showed the clouds of financial gloom were already lifting.

Built in 1932 on the site of Stewart Dawson’s corner (plus the adjoining site), it was the new headquarters of the Manchester Unity Independent Order of Odd Fellows (IOOF), a non-profit friendly society with a strong sense of tradition and the noble motto ‘Friendship, Love and Truth’. The prominent Melbourne architect Marcus Barlow was entrusted with the design and W E Cooper Pty Ltd contracted to build. Barlow had drawn his inspiration from the 1927 Chicago Tribune Building in the United States.

ESTHER WEINBERY JEWELLERY
WHO I AM
I’m Esther Weinberg, an artisan jeweller working out of my plant-filled studio in Melbourne, the Manchester Unity Building.
WHAT I BELIEVE
Investing in handmade jewellery makes you MY one in a million and even if I make two of the same thing, they will never be totally alike. Why? Because I work with my hands. Over and over again, I make the choice to create something from bare materials. I saw, roll, solder, melt, emery and polish metal.
WHAT I MAKE
I offer a range of almost-ready-to-wear jewellery designs (they are still handmade to measure!) and I truly love when people want one of these designs. I make time each week to sketch and create new designs and keep my brain ticking.
I also cherish the opportunity of creating custom jewellery, one of a kind pieces for my customers. Each of these pieces are infused with their dreams and memories, and we truly collaborate and create something incomparable. Sometimes they’ve envisioned something for themselves, and sometimes it’s for someone they love.
WHAT I KNOW
I’ve always been a (jewellery) maker, and my first label, Eleven Hearts Jewellery, was stocked in boutiques across Melbourne, Sydney and Adelaide.
I formalised my skills with Product Design at NMIT where the emphasis was very much on hand skills and working with different materials and this cemented my passion for working with metals (precious and otherwise).
I then studied Gold and Silver Smithing at RMIT – a highly conceptualised, boundary-pushing course giving me a rounded view of both jewellery and art history. In this course, I directed my practise into silversmithing and creating larger objects, such as the eponymous RMIT teapot – a traditional student-work for this course since 1961!
WHAT I LOVE
I live with my endlessly supportive and unconditionally loving partner Yowie, and my dogs, way too many plants, and way too many renovation projects. I’m always creating in every aspect of my life!
WHY I LOVE YOU
You’re here, and you get it: whether it’s ready-to-wear or custom, you know there is no other piece like it on anyone else’s neck, wrist or finger. The handmade jewellery you wear and supporting hand-makers sets you apart from everyone else. You’re one in a million.

ARCHITECTURE
On the corner of Collins Street and Swanston Street is a Neo-Gothic building bearing an uncanny resemblance to Chicago’s Tribune Tower.
This iconic building represents a rare blend of art, science, culture and commerce. As a magnificent structure, as a monument to human endeavour and as a hub of personal interaction, it has a special place in the history of Melbourne and the hearts of its citizens as well as the city’s economy.
The Architect
Marcus Barlow (1890-1954) took full advantage of the innovations and technologies available to him at the time and was the first Melbourne architect to use escalators and air conditioning in his buildings.
Marcus Barlow was responsible for the speedy construction of The Manchester Unity Building, spending time beforehand setting out specifications and a detailed schedule which were followed exactly and led to a record setting construction phase. The record of building one floor every seven to 10 days was not broken until the 1980s. Barlow’s style ranges from classic to early modernist and he was inspired by the concrete jungles of New York and Chicago.
Barlow also designed the Century Building.
Construction and Design
The site was excavated, and the original building demolished in 1931 and construction began in January. By December the building was complete and was the first in Melbourne to feature an escalator, with one still in service.
400 tons of mother of pearl colored terracotta tiles cover the exterior and the interior includes Australian marble flooring and intricate mosaic work.
The bay windows give the second floor its distinctive look and there are large plate-glass windows on the first floor.
Originally the building was fitted with 2500 lamps and sand-blasted designs decorated the ground floor arcade.
The building is 132 feet and the tower and spire stretch a further 78 feet. In comparison the Tribune Tower, which inspired the Manchester, is 462 feet and has 36 floors.
The crowning glory of the building was its ornamental turreted tower (complete with flagpole), which rose 24 metres above the roof – more than half the 40 metre height of the main building.

HISTORY
Built during the Great Depression, the Manchester Unity Building was designed by architect Marcus Barlow for the Manchester Unity Independent Order of Oddfellows. The site was purchased for £250,000 and construction began midnight on the 1st of January 1932.
The building process marked the first occasion where a construction program schedule was used in Australia and builders desperate for work due to the Depression worked around the clock in eight hour shifts to ensure that the ground and first floor mezzanine were open for trade by September that same year.
It was built at a total cost of almost £600,000 for land and buildings, was of fireproof concrete-and-steel construction and was faced with 400 tons of mother-of-pearl coloured glazed terracotta (or faience) tiles.
Large plate-glass windows on the first floor and ornamental bay windows on the second floor gave distinction to the base of the building, as did balconies on the third floor. More than 10,000 panes of glass made up some 900 windows on the upper floors, with levels 2 to 5 being double glazed.
One floor was built every seven to ten days with 12 floors built in total. The building is 132 feet tall and when it was finished it became the tallest building in Melbourne. Today is stands as a one of Melbourne’s most architecturally impressive buildings.
The Client
The Manchester Unity International Order of Oddfellows in Victoria was founded on the 7th of December 1840 by eight men, including publisher Thomas Strode and Mayor of Melbourne Augustus Greeves. The 28,000 members took pride in tradition and their motto was ‘Friendship, Love and Truth.’
Tenants
Originally the ground and mezzanine levels were home to 23 shops and seven kiosks, and the building served as the headquarters to The Manchester Unity International Order of Oddfellows. On the 12th floor there was a rooftop garden café fitted with a fountain, pond and Japanese palms, and the basement served as a tearoom and café.
These days the building’s most visited tenants are Dr Kia Pajouhesh’s Smile Solutions which operates across 25 suites.
The level 11 boardroom has been painstakingly restored and is still in use and features the original table.
The boardroom table, measuring 19 feet 6 inches (almost 6 metres) by 6 feet (1.8 metres) at its widest point, was crafted out of Queensland maple cross-banded with rosewood. It is topped with a single sheet of plate-glass that alone weighs some 330 kilograms. With no glazier equipped to manufacture it locally, the glass was produced overseas and delivered to Level 11 through the ceiling as it was too big to fit through any doorways or windows. The Liberman brothers paid an additional $6000 for the boardroom table when they bought the building in 1986. It has survived all of the building’s refurbishments.
Other tenants include 1932 Cafe & Restaurant, Temelli Jewelers, Esther Weinberg Jewellery and The Distinctive Dame
In 2015 the Manchester Unity Building teamed up with 1932 Café & Restaurant to offer an exclusive “Meal & Tour” experience. Currently running once a month on a Sunday, you can choose from breakfast, lunch or afternoon tea sessions.
