Nicholas Building

Introduction

The Nicholas Building is a landmark historic office and retail building located at 37 Swanston St, at the intersection of Swanston Street and Flinders Lane, in the central business district of Melbourne, Australia.

Cathedral Arcade is a heritage shopping arcade in Melbourne, Victoria.

It forms a short, narrow laneway, connecting Swanston Street to Flinders Lane in the central business district of Melbourne. It is a T-shaped arcade, however one of the laneways terminates inside the building.

History

The Nicholas family, headed by Alfred Nicholas, built their fortune on the production of Aspro, a replacement for the German-made aspirin when it became unavailable during World War I. The Nicholas company never occupied the building; it was instead built as a speculative office building development. It was completed in 1926 and designed by architect Harry Norris. Norris established his architecture practice in the building, remaining until his retirement in the mid-fifties. From 1926 to 1967 a Coles department store occupied the basement and part of the ground floor. The building was home to businesses associated with the Flinders Lane garment trade, commercial artists, medical practitioners and architects. By the 2010s the small rooms and relatively cheap rent attracted creative industry practitioners and specialist retailers, some of whom still serve the fashion industry, and it became renowned as one of Melbourne's 'vertical lanes'.

The novel Shantaram, written by one of Australia's most wanted fugitives Gregory David Roberts, was written in the building. In 2003 it is believed a stencil by UK artist Banksy was painted on the building at the corner of Swanston St and Flinders Lane; a piece of plastic was put up over the piece to protect it from the elements but was later painted over by vandals causing a disturbance in the art community.

The Nicholas Building was home to the last manually operated elevator in Melbourne before undergoing modernisation.

It is listed by the National Trust and is also listed by Heritage Victoria.

Architecture

Designed by architect Harry Norris and completed in 1926, it is the grandest example in Melbourne of what is known as the 'Chicago School' or 'Commercial Palazzo' style, featuring large scale classical elements. It has long housed a range of small businesses, and is now known for its creative industry tenants such as fashion designers and artists and specialist retailers. It had the longest operating manual lifts in the city, and the ground floor Cathedral Arcade is one of the most notable arcades in the city.

The arcade is notable as it retains all of its original features. The arcade is fully covered by stained glass and leadlights, which forms a highly detailed arch leading to a central dome. The floors are decorated with ceramic tiles, and the shopfronts feature richly detailed wood panels.

The art deco arcade, which dates back to 1925, is part of the Nicholas Building, an early interwar palazzo skyscraper designed by Harry Norris. The building itself, including the arcade is listed on the Victorian Heritage Register.

The Nicholas Building was built in a time of imposed height restrictions that lasted from 1916 to 1957 and stated a limit of 132 ft (40.3 m). It consists of 10 floors and is influenced by the Chicago style evident in Melbourne at the time. It has a terracotta faience façade which was designed to self-clean; the grey terracotta manufactured as ‘Granitex’ by Wunderlich was used due to its durability and ease of maintenance. The exterior has a variety of Classical Revival features, such as giant order ionic pilasters to divide the upper façade into bays and Doric columns defining the lower section.

A steel frame structure was used for the first three floors with reinforced concrete on the upper floors. The offices above the first floor was planned around a light well, many now used as studio spaces.

LANEWAY LEARNING

Fun classes, learning new skills and meeting awesome people!

Laneway Learning hosts informal, accessible evening classes in a diverse range of topics. We are a not-for-profit community-based organisation that first started in Melbourne in March 2012 (and has since spread to other cities!).

Our classes are probably unlike any others you have been to. They are affordable, informal and are taught by ordinary people from the local community; florists teach about flowers, scientists about science and bookworms about books. Attending them is less about becoming an expert overnight and more about getting some top tips to take home and practice later.

Come to a Laneway Learning class and you might go away with enough knitting know-how to make your first scarf, an art historian's eye for a painting, or a killer recipe for chutney. Look at our full list of upcoming classes to see what takes your fancy on the website. Click on the class for more detail and an easy booking and payment link.

architecture

Built in 1926, the heritage-listed building was designed by Harry Norris, and is Melbourne’s grandest example of ‘Chicago Style’ architecture. Listed by the National Trust, the building features a ground level arcade with a vaulted and domed lead-light ceiling.

The offices above the first floor were planned around a light well, many now used as studio spaces.

The Cathedral Arcade:

The arcade is notable as it retains all of its original features. The arcade is fully covered by stained glass and leadlights, which forms a highly detailed arch leading to a central dome. The floors are decorated with ceramic tiles, and the shopfronts feature richly detailed wood panels.

History

The Nicholas family, headed by Alfred Nicholas, built their fortune on the production of Aspro, a replacement for the German-made aspirin when it became unavailable during World War I.

The Nicholas company built the Nicholas Building as a speculative office building development.

Designed by architect Harry Norris and completed in 1926, it is the grandest example in Melbourne of what is known as the 'Chicago School' or 'Commercial Palazzo' style, featuring large scale classical elements. Architect Harry Norris, a major designer of Art Deco buildings in Melbourne through the 20s and 30s, frequently visited the United States to take inspiration from the skyscrapers that were going up in cities across the US.

The arcade opened with great fanfare, boasting a women’s drapers, a guinea shoe store, women’s beauty salon (with the latest waving and beauty appliances), and men’s hairdresser, ‘with all the latest devices and novelties’

From 1926 to 1967 a Coles department store occupied the basement and part of the ground floor.

By the 2010s the small rooms and relatively cheap rent attracted creative industry practitioners and specialist retailers, some of whom still serve the fashion industry, and it became renowned as one of Melbourne's 'vertical lanes'. The Nicholas Building is now home to an eclectic mix of galleries, boutiques, artists, musicians, jewelers, designers, architects, and technology innovators and today one of the city's most thriving creative hubs.

It had the longest and last manually operated manual lifts in the city until 2012, before its modernization , and the ground floor Cathedral Arcade is one of the most notable arcades in the city. It forms a short, narrow laneway, connecting Swanston Street to Flinders Lane in the central business district of Melbourne. It is a T-shaped arcade, however one of the laneways terminates inside the building.

The building itself, including the arcade is listed on the Victorian Heritage Register and by the NATIONAL Trust.
