A piece of nostalgia: How a passionate family kept this timeless Melbourne business alive
For Damon Velakoulis, leather has long been in his blood.
Velakoulis is the grandson of Evan Skliros, founder of the eponymous Evans Leather Repair, founded in 1956 and a mainstay of Melbourne’s historical Royal Arcade.
Skliros, a migrant from Greece, was working at another shoe factory at the time, but wanted to be a “free man” and run his own business, Velakoulis says. This led him to starting Evans, initially as a shoemaking and bagmaking business.
Velakoulis describes it as moving the business into the 21st century, but without “losing its DNA”.
While Evans will still repair your boots or fix a broken buckle on your handbag, the store has shifted its focus into the world of luxury leathergoods.
Evans is a timeless business, and one which will always be able to keep up with shifting fashion trends.
The workshop continues to provide bespoke repair and restoration services for shoe, handbag and leather goods of high sentimental or commercial value.

Caffé E Torta is a little piece of Italian heaven inside the Royal Arcade. The menu focuses on sustainable and quality ingredients, fresh produce, and simply prepared dishes that are big on flavour and taste.

The Royal Arcade was the second shopping arcade built in Melbourne with the first being the Queen’s Arcade, which was built in 1853. The Queen’s Arcade did not last long and was demolished long ago, leaving The Royal Arcade to claim the honour of being both Melbourne’s and Australia’s oldest surviving shopping arcade.
The Royal Arcade was proudly the first arcade in Melbourne and is the longest-standing arcade in Australia. Its historical significance is profound and underpinned by the fact that, as a significant Victorian era building, it is part of the Victorian Heritage Register.
A historic site
The land on which the arcade was built was prime land when Melbourne was first settled. It was the first land purchase by Mr Joseph Moore in 1837 for the princely sum of £20. In 1855 it was purchased for £650 by Mr Simon Staughton. Construction of the Royal Arcade began in June of 1869 and was completed by May 1870 and was officially opened by Lord Mayor Charles Amess.
A competitive design
In 1868, a major competition was held for the design of the Royal Arcade. The winning entry was by Mr Charles Webb, a 19th Century architect from Suffolk, England. His successful design was in the Italianate style, drawing on influential French and English models demonstrating essential qualities of those traditional styles.
Melbourne is of course blessed with several of Charles Webb’s buildings including Melbourne Grammar School, Tasma Terrace, South Melbourne Town Hall, The Church of Christ, Banks and Co. Warehouse, and the renowned Windsor Hotel.
Modern history – The last century
In 1902, an annex was added to link the arcade to Elizabeth Street. This throughway allowed the opening of more businesses.
From that time, the arcade remained in the families of Spenseley and Staughton until 1955, when the arcade was auctioned and sold to a company formed by its tenants.
In 1958 the Royal Arcade set a record for the highest price ever paid for real estate in the central city when it was sold at auction for £541,000.
More recently, the ageing Royal Arcade was refurbished and restored to its former glory during 2002 – 2004, with extensive work on skylights and storefronts.
The beauty of the Royal Arcade is it remains largely unchanged today, yet its Renaissance Revival style is in pristine condition.
The Royal Arcade remains one of Melbourne’s favourite ‘must visit’ destinations, offering extravagant boutique wares and refined delights through its many elegant and distinctive shops.

The most striking feature of the arcade is the magnificent Gaunt’s Clock which is flanked either side by two giant statues of the mythical figures of Gog and Magog. Since 1892, these mammoth statues have struck chimes at every hour, and are still heard today resounding throughout the arcade. Several myths surround Gog and Magog, including one where they were guards of the underworld and gods of dark spirits. As the prophecy goes, once when Gog and Magog return to war, the war will end.
The arcade also features another symbolic statue, Chronos, a Greek mythological character known as Father Time.
In 1934, the original Castlemaine flag floor was replaced with black and white square concrete floor tiles, which in turn were later replaced by better quality black and white terrazzo tiles. In the 1950s a cantilevered verandah was added to the Little Collins Street façade and in 2002 work began to refurbish and restore the arcade back to its original glory by Allom Lovell & Associates.

PAINT N POWDER
In 1969 Diane and Neville opened Paint ‘n Powder, a boutique French perfumery in Royal Arcade, which was unique to Australia.
The guiding light of Paint ‘n Powder Diane together with her husband Neville, founded Paint ‘n Powder nearly 50 years ago.
Both qualified pharmacists, they recognized beauty and perfume as being a natural extension to their already established business. It was out of this passion for perfume and accessories that Paint ‘n Powder was born.
Anyone fortunate enough to be served by Diane will certainly be entertained by her unrivaled knowledge and her ability to draw on her incomparable resources to help them enjoy a genuinely helpful shopping experience.
Their daughter, Abbie was born into the business. After completing her training as a beauty therapist with Guerlain in Paris, Abbie returned to Melbourne where she set about running the very popular Beauty Salon upstairs.
Twenty-five years of experience working in the salon and shop have seen Abbie slide effortlessly into her role as the fresh face of Paint ‘n Powder today.
In 2019 Abbie & Neville were recipients of the Lord Mayor Commendation award recognizing small businesses that have operated continuously within the City of Melbourne for 25 years and 50 years respectively.

Well, I think it would have to be our sense of fun!
Hoot takes a quirky and amusing outlook, and then converts that into gifts that are practical and functional, but also have a twist.
Hoot aims to produce a smile. Yes, we are sometimes somewhat irreverent and sometimes politically incorrect, but we believe that this may be part of our appeal. There is no point however in giving gifts which don't last the distance. We don't want anyone's pleasure to sour. So, all our products are of top quality and are market leaders in category.

KIT Espresso opened in 2016, making it the youngest of the family of five Padre outlets. It brings the down-to-earth Padre attitude to a new, tough audience – the CBD coffee crowd.
KIT ESPRESSO has the most up to date equipment for the home brewer or professional. They stock the full range of coffees from local roaster Padre Coffee and are focused on improving your home brewing experience.
Small and sleek but with a lot of heart, hidden away in Royal Arcade it stocks a pared back collection of the usual coffee gadgets. Fresh Padre beans are available to take home or keep around the office. As always, coffee is king, but fresh colourful pastries fill the glass cabinet.
They roast coffee in small batches, juggling time, temperature and air-flow to create a fulfilling flavour profile for each style. Grab a coffee to go or perch on the bar seating for a quick pit stop.

We travelled to Germany to learn the art of making chocolate from the bean and then on to Belgium where we met a passionate and talented chocolatier, who later helped kick start the development of Koko Black’s chocolate signature.
